Virgil van Dijk drops fitness hint ahead of Liverpool's clash with Chelsea

Liverpool injury doubt Virgil van Dijk has dropped a hint on social media that he might be back in time to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Dutchman, the world's most expensive defender, hobbled off in the second half of Liverpool's victory over Southampton in the Premier League last weekend.

He has not trained since, and he was absent from the side as Liverpool were knocked out of the Carabao Cup against Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

Manager Jurgen Klopp is still unsure if he will be fit for the trip to Stamford Bridge in the league, though Van Dijk has intimated that he is targeting a return against Chelsea.

'Focussed and looking forward to another big game tomorrow against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge,' he posted on Instagram on Friday.

If Van Dijk is not fit, Klopp will have to decide between Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip as the Dutchman's replacement in central defence.

'We have to wait, he didn't train with the team so far,' explained the German. 'If Virgil is fit, he plays. If not, then obviously we have options.

'Virgil is a world-class player, and if you miss a world-class player always it's not cool.

'But Lovren played his first game in 10 weeks. He played an outstanding game. Matip, two games in a row, fantastic.'

Although Van Dijk may miss the match, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum are expected to be fit again.
