The Juventus striker was involved in an off-the-ball incident confrontation with Jeison Murillo as center-referee Felix Brych brandished a red to the Portuguese.
In the replay showed, the former Real Madrid star seemed to have pulled the defender's hair while the pair came together.
The 33-year-old broke down to tears as hit the early showers and could miss a reunion with his former club Manchester United.
The dismissal was the 11th of Ronaldo's career and his first since January 2015 when Real Madrid took on Cordoba.
Here are four other times Ronaldo escaped being red carded
1. An elbow on Dani Alves during el Clasico
During fiercely contested el Clasico played at the Nou Camp in 2015, Real Madrid was on the counter attack with Ronaldo as he was impeded by the Brazilian.
He flashed his elbow across the face of the left-back which resulted into a yellow card.
2. A punch in the back Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke
In the thick of the Madrid derby, Ronaldo and Koke were involved in an aerial contest as the Portuguese punched the Spaniard in the back and went away with just a yellow card.
3. An elbow across an Iran defender's face
During the World Cup, Ronaldo was lucky not to have been given his Marching orders as he brushed his elbow across Mortez Pouraligani's face. He only got the yellow card after the VAR was consulted.
4. A confrontation with Jan Vertonghen
Real Madrid's last season's Champions League group match with Tottenham saw Ronaldo pulling Jan Vertonghen's hair and he got booked in the process.
