Liverpool increase offer for Domagoj Vida to £20m as Premier League move looms

Liverpool have submitted a second offer to sign Croatia international Domagoj Vida as their efforts to further improve their defence continue.

The Reds had previously put together a package worth £17m in an effort to lure the 29-year-old to Anfield this summer.

But Turkish publication Fanatik understand Liverpool have made a follow-up bid worth closer to £20m in an effort to convince Besiktas to sell the centre-back.

A Besiktas spokesman added, according to The Mirror: 'We have received offers for Vida and we are considering them but that does not mean he will definitely leave.

'Every player has a price, we will make a final decision in accordance with our budget and interests.'

Vida's reputation was enhanced during the World Cup after a string of fine displays alongside Liverpool's Dejan Lovren helped Croatia reach the final.

The ex-Bayer Leverkusen man was however powerless to prevent France strolling to a 4-2 victory in Moscow as Les Blues claimed their second World Cup success.

Having only moved to Turkey in January, Besiktas want £31m for Vida however reports suggest that he is likely to move to a Premier League club this summer.

Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are both noted admirers but the player is keen on a move to Merseyside.

Away from his performances on the field, Vida was warned twice by Fifa after posting videos which were deemed to include political references.

Footage showed him saying 'Glory to Ukraine', a slogan which has been used by anti-Russian politicians but world football's governing body took no action.

Having stared alongside Lovren in Russia, Vida's arrival at Liverpool would likely see him replace his international teammate.

With Virgil van Dijk first choice since his January move from Southampton, Jurgen Klopp is keen to further beef up his back-line to ensure his side can improve on their third place finish in the Premier League.
