N'Golo Kante delivers humble response when told he stopped Lionel Messi at the World Cup

N'Golo Kante has given a typically humble response to suggestions that he stopped Lionel Messi at the World Cup this summer.

The Chelsea midfielder has cemented his reputation as one of the world's best defensive midfielders after playing a key role in France's success in Russia.

And it has emerged that Kante is one of the most popular players in the France dressing room as he has been constantly serenaded with his own song by his teammates.

A line in the song claims that Kante stopped Messi in reference to his display in France's 4-3 victory over Argentina in the last-16 stage.

But when France midfielder Blaise Matuidi told Kante that he got the better of Argentina's talisman, the Chelsea midfielder wasn't having any of it.

As videos of France's players emerged during their celebrations after Sunday's win over Croatia in the final, Kante was notably reserved in comparison to his teammates.

France's players sang to the 27-year-old: 'N'Golo Kante, N'Golo Kante, he's short, he's beautiful, he's the one that stopped Leo Messi, N'Golo Kante.'

On Monday, Paul Pogba sparked the song once again which even prompted France boss Didier Deschamps to join in, but Kante's shyness and modesty continued.

'Kante, he is small but he stopped Messi,' Matuidi said during France's celebrations on their team bus.

But Kante replied: 'No, no. We did it together.'
