However, fans were quick to lay the blame elsewhere.
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is well-respected by fans of the Premier League for his weekly heroics - often saving the Red Devils.
But his time in Russia has been suspect, to say the least.
After a shaky start against Portugal where he dropped a clanger to allow Cristiano Ronaldoto score, the Spain No.1 never really recovered.
Of the seven shots he faced at the World Cup, he managed to save just six.
And he failed to save any of the penalties he faced in the shootout defat to Russia.
