Karim Benzema signs new Real Madrid deal with €1BILLION release clause

Karim Benzema has signed a new four-year contract with Real Madrid.

The deal is understood to contain a release clause of €1BILLION [£890million].

The 29-year-old is in his ninth season at the Bernabeu, having arrived from Lyon in 2009 for a fee of around €35million.

He has scored 181 goals in 371 appearances for the Spanish giants and won 14 major honours with the club, including three Champions League crowns and two LaLiga titles.

Benzema has long been the subject of transfer stories linking him to Arsenal, with a story in the Spanish press this week claiming that Madrid were considering selling the France international to the Gunners.

But the Frenchman, who had two years remaining on his existing terms, has now become the latest player to prolong his stay with Los Blancos after Isco, Marcelo and Dani Carvajal did so in the past week.

A statement on Real's website read: "Real Madrid C.F. and Karim Benzema have agreed an extension to the player's contract, binding him to the club until 30 June 2021."
