Army captures top Boko Haram commander in Borno

The Nigerian Army and members of vigilantes on routine patrol have arrested a suspected Boko Haram leader.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Wednesday that the top terror suspect, Mohammed Zauro, was arrested at Sabon Gari in Damboa Local Government of Borno State by 8:30 am on Thursday.

Usman said that the kingpin was arrested while he was trying to flee from the Sambisa Forest to Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

He said that the troops recovered "a Gionee brand of mobile telephone handset and a fake SAIE/JIBWIS identification card to perfect his escape and the sum of N7,900."

He stated also the troops also intercepted another Boko Haram terrorist identified as Lawal Aboi, along Damboa-Bale Road.

Usman said that the Boko Haram suspect told military interrogators that he was arrested while going to volunteer to troops in Damboa, Borno State.

He was said to have told the soldiers that he was tired of fighting on the part of the Boko Haram for no just cause.
